Prepare to be enchanted as we journey into the whimsical world of light and shadows! On 16 September 2023, we embarked on an adventure that transported us to a world where magic and learning collide. This captivating event, hosted in the heart of the Makerspace, unveiled the endless possibilities of light and shadow, leaving all participants spellbound.
So many questions…. Are those conjoined christmas trees? What is Dr Aletheia holding? Did we just witness the crime suspect of the Maria doll?
This particular edition marked a special moment for our beloved Makerspace community. For the first time ever, we ventured to weave the enchanting threads of storytelling into the fabric of our "Explorers @ Makerspace: Light and Shadows Edition" event. As event ICs, we couldn't have been more thrilled to see this grand experiment come to life.
The idea to incorporate a storyline emerged during one of our brainstorming sessions. We pondered how to infuse even more magic into an event that already celebrated the wonders of science, art, and creativity. That's when it hit us – why not create a narrative that would transport our participants to a world where they could be not just explorers of our Makerspace but also adventurers in a mystical realm?
And so, Eldoria was born—a mythical land where darkness had befallen the once-glorious realm. The villagers yearned for the lost brilliance of the Sun Crystals, gems capable of capturing and radiating light. To restore light back to Eldoria, a group of courageous friends set forth on a quest. Their journey began with a visit from a glowing firefly named Liyana, bearing a cryptic message: "The Lumaria Makerspace holds the secret to capturing light." It was a tale waiting to be told, an adventure ready to unfold.
As the event day approached, our anticipation soared. Would our narrative experiment capture the imaginations of our participants? Could we successfully blend the elements of light and shadows with a captivating story? The pressure was on, but so was the excitement.

The day has come and the moment of truth arrived. Our Makerspace was transformed into a mystical realm for the people of Eldoria, and our explorers set forth on their quest. Guided by our lovely event ICs, our intrepid explorers embarked on a wondrous adventure that took them through Twilight’s Glowria, where the Dark Room revealed the mesmerizing interplay of glow, light and shadows. Next, they navigated across the enchanting Starry Streams, basking in the beauty of starlight. The journey continued to the Colour Gleam, a corner filled with hues and shades that showcased the mesmerizing world of colors. Along the way, they encountered whimsical characters at the Luminous Theatre, where Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) gifted them with fragments of forgotten tales.

The quest in Lumaria Makerspace mirrors the event's theme of exploring light and shadows. As our explorers sought to capture light to bring back to Eldoria, so did we dive deep into the magic of illumination. Light and shadows became our companions, teaching us about the intricate dance between brightness and obscurity.
The response from our participants exceeded our wildest expectations. The storyline had added an extra layer of depth and engagement to the event. It was a testament to the power of creativity and imagination, and we were humbled by the sense of community and adventure that had emerged. In the Colour Gleam, a corner that beckoned with its vibrant hues and captivating shades. Here, we immersed ourselves in a world where colors came to life. Using a variety of materials and techniques, we experimented with light and shadows to create stunning displays of color. It was like painting with light itself, as we crafted our own rainbows and marveled at the kaleidoscope of possibilities.

The "Glow" segment of our adventure was a glow-in-the-dark extravaganza. Armed with glowsticks, participants became living works of art, casting captivating shadows in the dark. It was a mesmerizing sight as our creations glowed and pulsed, turning our explorers into living constellations of light. We learned that even the simplest sources of light can create moments of pure magic.
Glowsticks are a self-generating source of light so I’m creating my own mystical creature basked in glow liquids that I’ll bring over to convince the people of Eldoria that hey light exists in this land over here…..
In our exploration of light and shadows, we couldn't forget the mesmerizing interplay that occurs when light encounters objects in its path. Participants uncover the secrets of shadows, transforming ordinary objects into mysterious and fascinating shapes. Our explorers marveled at the unexpected beauty found in the absence of light.
Shadows are the footprint of light so I’ll bring this shadow drawing over to the people of Eldoria. They’ll be confused at first about what my drawing is but once I explain the perspective of my drawing…. They’ll be so stoked!
Throughout the Lumaria Makerspace, we discreetly placed enchanting envelopes, each holding questions to be ventured – that led explorers to interactive experiences that weren't on the official map. At Starry Streams, a celestial challenge awaited. Those who gazed up at the "night sky" were surprised to find constellations that weren't quite like the ones in Eldoria. Here, participants used various materials and techniques to mimic the beauty of a starry night sky with twinkling lights, reflective surfaces and an unexpected find – a wheel. Participants spin their way into wonder and brought the cosmos down to Earth, allowing everyone to gaze in awe at their own celestial creations.
The wheel's cosmic legacy lives on as a testament to the creativity and curiosity that define our Makerspace community.
As we bid farewell to "Explorers @ Makerspace: Light and Shadows Edition," we do so with hearts brimming with gratitude and wonder. This event has been a remarkable journey— one filled with curiosity, creativity, and the magic of exploration. We ventured into the realms of light and shadows, unraveling mysteries, and creating memories that will linger in our minds like the brightest stars in the night sky.
